Fort, the first Hold settled by refugees from Landing, is an enormous cave complex cut into a great cliff face, with numerous stone outbuildings huddled up alongside. At the time of the Second Pass, it hosts the College--the great center of learning that will eventually break apart into individual Crafthalls--murals and records of Pern's original human settlers, and the archives containing what is left of Pern's last computers, solar panels, and other defunct technological equipment. As a center of culture and learning, it is generally respected as first among Holds, and not just for its age.

Ruatha Hold, founded by the Hanrahan family that provided many of the first dragonriders, is another cliff-sheltered cavern complex and one the larger holds on Pern. Northeast of Fort in the mountain foothills, Ruatha is bounded by swift snowmelt rivers and is even as early as the Second Pass famous for its horse breeding and strong ties to the Weyrs. Ruatha is also a frequent stop for cross-continental traders, who move through its safe fords and gentle landscape on their way from Fort through the plains of Keroon to the east coast Holds and back.

Southern Boll Hold, named for colonist and war hero Emily Boll, is situated on the rainy peninsula south of Fort. It boasts fine agriculture and textiles, hosts the Masterweaverhall, and it known as a stable, pleasant place to live. Southern Boll is the second-oldest of the Northern Continent's Holds.

The College is the center of the Healers' study of medicine and the Artists' pursuit of beauty, and is the birthplace of the new craft of Harpers, an organization of minstrels and educators brought together at the beginning of the Second Pass to teach Holders via learning songs, encourage oral tradition as a method of cultural preservation, and, of course, to entertain. It also hosts nearly all of the archival records saved by the first refugees from Landing, including stacks stuffed full of printouts from dying computers that have hardly yet been collated or cataloged.

Fort is the oldest Weyr, founded by the original dragonriders who made the crossing from Landing. It's well-established, protecting the area from Ruatha Hold to the north to Southern Boll in the south, including Fort Hold and the College, and holds a mid-Pass fighting strength of approximately five hundred dragons.
